Washington State Recognized School: Congratulations, English Crossing!

English Crossing Elementary School has been honored with a Washington School Recognition Award for the 2023-2024 school year. The school was recognized for Growth for English Learner students. Only 16% of schools statewide received recognition this year.

“All of our staff work incredibly hard to support students,” said Superintendent Dr. Erin Murphy. “This achievement shines a light on the dedication I see every day across our schools and classrooms.”

Spring is the perfect time to learn outside. On one recent sunny day, Jennifer Bader’s fifth graders at English Crossing went outside during regular intervals to check on the movement of their sun dials. Each time they recorded their observations and the movement of the shadows.

After recording their latest observations, students returned to the classroom to practice tile patterns in math. These building blocks are helping to lay the foundation for sixth grade math at Lakewood Middle School next year.

Happy Earth Day! If your student rides Route 11, you may have noticed this month that we have a new Bluebird electric school bus. Lakewood ordered three new electric school buses, and related charging infrastructure, with a $1.6 million grant from the Washington Department of Ecology. The first bus was delivered in March and the second was delivered in April, bringing our total number of electric buses to five.

These buses will replace our aging diesel buses. In addition to reducing carbon emissions, electric buses save money since we don’t have to purchase fuel. Another bonus – since the bus is so quiet, students naturally talk at a lower volume.
